About Synchronicity Earth

Preserving biodiversity and tackling extinction

DSC_0306Synchronicity Earth is an environmental organisation with a mission that is both urgent and ambitious: to combat the extinction crisis, conserve biodiversity wherever it is threatened and promote a better relationship between people and planet.

We work on the assumption that:

– conservation can be effective, if done thoughtfully.

– people do care, if armed with the right knowledge.

Our current priorities are:

– To support effective conservation action on the ground by building alliances with local communities and NGOs, scientists, researchers and larger organisations to tackle biodiversity loss and prevent extinction in the world’s most ecologically diverse and vulnerable places.

– To combat dislocation from the natural world, particularly in urban environments, using art and other cultural forms to highlight the beauty, diversity, vulnerability and integral importance of nature. By showing nature in unexpected places, we hope to inspire reflection and action.

“Every species is unique and priceless, a work of art created over thousands or even millions of years. They all enrich our world as nothing else can.”

Joel Sartore, National Geographic Fellow and Photographer

Using the experience and knowledge of our scientific advisors as a foundation, we identify key conservation challenges and ways that our funding can make a meaningful difference.

We understand the need to build a strong movement of people working together towards a shared goal. We develop networks to protect wildlife and threatened communities in the most biodiverse regions of the world, focusing primarily on species or regions that receive the least conservation attention and funding. Whilst the challenges this brings are daunting, we are amassing strong evidence that conversation – done well – can be effective. Our partners are bringing threatened species back from the brink and restoring habitats that were almost lost.

At this moment, around the globe, an unsung army of dedicated conservationists is engaged in the struggle to protect the landscapes, habitats and species they grew up with. They need and deserve more support. We know what worksThere is just not enough of it.

What can you do to help?

“It’s not about… can ONE person make a difference. Everybody, every day, DOES make a difference, and if we think about the consequences of the choices we make, what we buy, what we eat, what we wear and we start making the right ethical choices then, when that’s multiplied… a thousand, a million, a billion times, then we start to see the world moving towards change. The most important thing is to give people hope.”

Jane Goodall, speaking at the Paris Climate Summit COP21, 2015

There is room for hope. People working around the world – and closer to home – to conserve the Earth’s wild places and incredible species are testament to that hope.

For Synchronicity Earth, working with so many dedicated people around the world is a huge privilege and an invaluable learning experience. Our challenge is to transmit this learning to people closer to home to understand what is at stake, how we are all connected to our environment, not just locally, but globally, to see the connections between a coral reef and a Cottontail rabbit.

We need to halt and reverse the extinction crisis, not just for the unique species and habitats we stand to lose, but because we ourselves are an integral part of the very biodiversity we need to protect.
